Autumn's philosophy prizes: Nussbaum, Vetter and Dixsaut take the season's honours

Four awards fill in the autumn prize map. Martha Nussbaum takes the Library of Congress Kluge Prize; Barbara Vetter the German Research Foundation's Leibniz Prize; Monique Dixsaut the Academie francaise's grand prix de philosophie; and three sixth-formers from Mexico, Bulgaria and Singapore the gold medals at the Warsaw philosophy olympiad.

Korean philosophy at Hildesheim, Chinese science at Hangzhou: October's diary

The international philosophy calendar this fortnight leans east. The University of Hildesheim gives four consecutive days to Korean philosophy, from a North American association's conference to a workshop on thinkers of the colonial period; at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, the historiography of science in China is argued as a philosophical problem.

Otto Weininger, Sputnik and the ten days the calendar lost: 4 October

On 4 October 1903 Otto Weininger shot himself in Vienna at twenty-three, months after publishing Sex and Character, a book of real brilliance and real poison. On the same date in 1957 Sputnik left the earth and gave Hannah Arendt the opening of The Human Condition; and in 1582 the calendar simply lost ten days.

The day Philippa Foot was born and died: 3 October, with Assisi and Morris

Philippa Foot was born on 3 October 1920 and died on 3 October 2010, her ninetieth birthday: the philosopher who devised the trolley problem and helped revive virtue ethics. The same date carries the deaths of Francis of Assisi in 1226 and William Morris in 1896, and German reunification in 1990.

Ioanna Kuçuradi, who grounded human rights in the value of the human, dies at 89

Ioanna Kuçuradi, the Turkish philosopher who in 1998 became the first woman to preside over the world federation of philosophical societies and who argued that human rights follow from what a human being is rather than from any treaty, has died in Istanbul at 89, two days before her ninetieth birthday.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 and Gilbert Simondon on 2 October 1924: one made non-violence a political method, the other rethought what a machine is. The same day gives the birth of Swami Abhedananda and of Wallace Stevens, and the death of Marcel Duchamp.
