The English philosopher known for his work on medieval philosophy, Aquinas and Wittgenstein. The four-volume 'A New History of Western Philosophy' is his most comprehensive work. He was Master of Balliol College from 1978 to 1989.
Everyone carries a potted Wittgenstein: first he drew the limits of language, then he decided meaning is use. Specialists have largely stopped believing that story. What survives is stranger and more useful - a single long experiment in what philosophy is for.

Sir Anthony Kenny, the English philosopher known for his work on medieval philosophy, Aquinas and Wittgenstein, died on 3 August at the age of 95. A former Master of Balliol College, he was best known for his four-volume history of philosophy.
