Philosopher
German philosopher of religion and materialist (1804–1872)
Germany · d. 28 July 1804 (Landshut, Bavaria) — 13 September 1872 (Rechenberg, near Nuremberg)
Argued that God is the human species-essence projected outwards and worshipped as an alien being, so that theology is really anthropology. A Young Hegelian who broke with Hegel's idealism for a materialism grounded in sensuous, embodied life. The Essence of Christianity shaped Marx and Engels, who then criticised its unhistorical view of humanity.
Mary Midgley was born on 13 September 1919, Montaigne died on 13 September 1592 and Feuerbach on 13 September 1872. Three thinkers, one suspicion: that we manufacture gods, myths and certainties, then treat them as though they had arrived from somewhere else.
Mary Midgley, Ludwig Feuerbach
