American aesthetician — the intentional fallacy and aesthetic experience

'The Intentional Fallacy', written with W. K. Wimsatt for the Sewanee Review in 1946, held that an author's intention is neither available nor decisive for judging a poem. 'The Affective Fallacy' followed in 1949, ruling out the reader's emotional response as evidence. Aesthetics: Problems in the Philosophy of Criticism (1958) then built the first systematic analytic philosophy of art. He died in Philadelphia on 18 September 1985.
On 18 September 1944 the University of Chicago Press published The Road to Serfdom in an edition of 2,000 copies. On 18 September 1985 Monroe Beardsley died. Between them they left two arguments that order and meaning need no single authorising mind — and the same date supplies the objections.
