Philosopher
British philosopher and archaeologist — art as expression, history as re-enactment
Magdalen College, Oxford · United Kingdom · d. 22 February 1889 (Cartmel Fell, Lancashire) — 9 January 1943 (Coniston, Lancashire)
Held the Waynflete chair at Oxford from 1935 until illness forced him out in 1941. The Principles of Art (1938) separates art proper, which expresses an emotion the artist does not yet understand, from craft, which executes a plan already formed. An Autobiography followed in 1939, and The Idea of History, assembled from his papers, appeared in 1946, three years after his death at Coniston.
