The founder of 'knowledge-first' epistemology, which treats knowledge as a basic concept irreducible to other mental states. He held the Wykeham Chair of Logic at Oxford from 2000 to 2023.
The international philosophy calendar this fortnight leans east. The University of Hildesheim gives four consecutive days to Korean philosophy, from a North American association's conference to a workshop on thinkers of the colonial period; at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, the historiography of science in China is argued as a philosophical problem.

Three centuries after his death in Hanover, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz survives in undergraduate memory as the man with the monads and the man Voltaire mocked. Both caricatures obscure the project that actually drove him: the conviction that reasoning could be made into a calculation, and the reasons he thought machines could never finish the job.
